One eye gives the viewer an immediate point of contact amid unfamiliar scales and textured skin. The eye recurs throughout Randy Gaul’s work as an aperture onto what we think we see. Here, the title’s play on identity meets his interest in perception as something deeply individual and biased. We search the strange surface for a recognizable presence, while its gaze seems to return the question: how much of what we see belongs to the subject, and how much to ourselves?
