A pale architectural surround extends a dark image into physical space, with projecting forms and hanging flames shaping the encounter. Randy Gaul describes Treading Water as a dream state in which feminine power is elevated and male dominance is reduced to reflections. The flames sustain the presence of the feminine spirit. Image and construction work together to make that reversal tangible, inviting the viewer to consider a world whose familiar hierarchies have become less certain.
