Disneytopia Study

These two round-eared faces are studies of the monkeys that inhabit Disneytopia. Randy Gaul used them to explore blankness and confusion, testing how subtle changes in features can make an expression immediately readable. Their apparent familiarity gives way to uncertainty as the viewer compares noses, cheeks, and gazes. With the surrounding spectacle removed, the study concentrates on the characters themselves and the uneasy personalities that emerge from a few carefully adjusted shapes.
