A wide-eyed creature peers from darkness, its fine facial projections catching the light around an inquisitive expression. Loma Lemur grew from Randy Gaul’s attention to actual places near his home, where a stump, cluster of roots, or gathering of vines can suggest an unseen inhabitant. He imagines these beings emerging to play while we sleep. The portrait gives that possibility a persuasive presence, transforming an encounter with an unfamiliar creature into a new way of looking at the nearby landscape.
