Steps climb the curved flank of an enormous trunk toward a broad canopy overhead. Around it, other rounded growths recede into a bright, hazy distance. Landscape 5 introduces a visible route into Randy Gaul’s imagined world, allowing the viewer to picture moving through its unfamiliar structures. One of eight small studies for a childlike place where nature dominates, it suggests an environment in which even a staircase must follow the shape and scale of the living landscape.
