Bare trees and a low band of fire surround a root-like figure beneath a full moon. Look closely at the orb atop the creature: Randy Gaul identifies a water molecule within it, a reminder of the dependence of life as we know it on water. The figure’s extended limbs repeat the shapes of the forest, connecting inhabitant and environment. Flame, darkness, and the essential presence of water hold the scene between vulnerability and the possibility of continued life.
