An arched neck, oversized eyes, and curling antennae give The Gnat a lively, inquisitive silhouette. The creature is one of dozens of character studies for Randy Gaul’s developing work Ascension, an exploration of what that term means to people around the world. Against an uncluttered ground, small projections and surface textures carry its personality. The portrait gives this diminutive inhabitant room to hold our attention, offering an intimate glimpse of a much larger gathering still taking shape.
