A spiny figure perches on an enormous branching structure, absorbed in the familiar occupation suggested by the title. Randy Gaul drew the setting from local landscapes, combining natural forms with his concern about the encroachment of flawed and dangerous technology. In this imagined environment, technology can distort life when consumed. Dark trunks and distant light extend the scene beyond its central inhabitant, making a recognizable act the starting point for a more unsettled relationship between nature and human invention.
