Flowing strands partially conceal a face whose eyes and delicate surface details make the encounter feel immediate. Randy Gaul places this mermaid within our collective memory of a mythical creature, unspoiled by human activity and vitally connected to the oceans. The close portrait gives that idea an intimate presence. Without a sweeping seascape, the viewer meets the being herself, allowing the image’s quiet mystery to carry a larger thought about the life and wonder held within the sea.
