While attending the Academy of Art in San Francisco, Josh Thurman developed a fascination with mixing classical painting techniques and illustrative design motifs. Drawn to a more designed cubist approach, he refined caricatures as a way to challenge fine art portraiture, but has now moved more predominantly toward nudes and figurative work.

Through curiosity and the experimentation of a variety of different mediums, his art is ever evolving. Wanting to step away from the female persona typically seen in paintings from the past, Thurmanโ€™s work begins to challenge taboo and move closer toward eroticism. He intends to reimagine the structure traditionally associated with beauty while attempting to illustrate a modern-day feminine persona.

AMANDALYNN + LADY MAGS

Opening Reception: Friday, JULY 12th, 2019 | 5-11pm | Through Aug. 29th

Alynn-Mags are very proud to present โ€˜Lullabyโ€™, a fine art exhibit, debuting at 111 Minna Gallery in San Francisco, CA, opening Friday, July 12th, 2019. By definition, the word Lullaby refers to a soothing song or piece of music that is played for children. Lullabies are also often used to develop communication skills and emotional intent. Amandalynn was inspired by a beautiful Lullaby written by her friend, Phyllis Whitney and sung by the very talented Venetia P. The simple yet meaningful words and melody of this particular Lullaby evoke an emotion of peace and connectedness to everyone. For Amandalynn, that is something that she also hopes to achieve with her new series of work for this exhibition. She shared this Lullaby with Lady Mags, and together the duo has been dreaming up a visual display of artwork intended to inspire and ease the viewer, just as the perfect Lullaby can soothe oneโ€™s inner child.

Together, Amanda Lynn and Lady Mags are known as Alynn-Mags, aย street mural and fine art team.ย  Both artists are Bay Area residents, and together they have over two decades of painting experience.ย  Alynn-Mags has been immediately recognized for their large-scale spray paint and acrylic brush paint mural combinations. In their fine art collaborations, the duo also merges different mediums and techniques to create their pieces. Lady Mags often works withย abstract watercolor imagery, which Amandalynn incorporates intoย her detailed illustrations. The symbiotic friendship between these two women shines through in their collaborative works, each element supporting the other in their final compositions.

(EVERY) NOW & THEN | The Art & Music of Romanowski

[cmsmasters_row][cmsmasters_column data_width=”1/1″][cmsmasters_text]

Celebrating 30 years of Swiss Made in America

(Every) Now and Then is a retrospective exhibition that represents 30 years of art and music by San Francisco icon and Swiss born artist, Roman Weingartner, but more widely known as ROMANOWSKI.

The show will highlight the artistโ€™s deep diversity in a wide range of mediums and practices, from assemblage, wood-work, stencils, sculpture, painting, photography, โ€œmattress bombing,โ€ music production, and turntablism.

Since his arrival in the U.S. in 1988, he has nurtured his many crafts, while garnering attention from likeminded artists both visual and musical for his originality. Romanowski has collaborated with many other well-known artists such as, Mars-1, Doze Green, Nome Edonna, Damon Soule, Brian Barneclo, David Choong Lee and Daniel James Burt. His musical collaborations are also extensive with artists such as Quantic, Tommy Guerrero, DJ Smash, Walter Earl, J. Whitfield, PEACE (Freestyle Fellowship) and more.

His musical inspirations are so vast and varied heโ€™s aptly dubbed his sets โ€œAll Styles, All Smilesโ€.

The Movies II | William Arvin Solo Show

Through December 20th

WILLIAM ARVIN | Show Statement

I remember watching movies on my VCR as a kid and pausing particularly striking scenes. I would allow the image to linger for a time until I could fully ingest its properties, often having to fight through the VHS glitches that would obstruct different parts of the image. Interrupting the narrative thread, the image as well as the illusion were suspended while breaking the fourth wall in this way, a way which gave me a sense of participation in the work, an empowered viewer who could wield the medium, and the work itself, to his own liking. Shadows, bright lights, shimmering rain and neon soaked streets, figures in motion, gripping facial expressions, pivotal moments in the story, compositions both structured and spontaneous, all of these elements mystified the screen and gave it gravity, elevating the consumer electronic device to the realm of the sacred.
