Festival

Fragments of color, line and pattern assemble into a lively vertical structure, with strips of saturated blue and red set among softer, more translucent passages. The title gives the arrangement a celebratory energy, but its pleasures are local as well as overall: an unexpected edge, a striped detail, a small change in texture. Smith’s combination of watercolor, ink and collage allows those individual pieces to keep their character while becoming part of a larger, shifting whole.
