Summer Book Club

Two readers bend toward their books in a tightly folded arrangement of heads, arms and legs. Their concentration makes a familiar social activity feel delightfully strange: company is present, but each reader also inhabits a private world. Bold stripes and warm color give the scene its rhythm, while Barbier’s elastic anatomy refuses ordinary decorum. The painting celebrates the small comedy of sharing space with someone who is, for the moment, somewhere else entirely.
