Towns People

Against an electric green ground, heads, clothing, limbs and a tree-like form appear as the scattered components of an eccentric community. The missing connections between them are part of the pleasure. Barbier gives each fragment enough character to suggest a person, then leaves the viewer to work out how the town might fit together. Published with her quarantine paintings, the work turns social life into a puzzle of partial encounters, exaggerated expressions and people who exceed their outlines.
