John Bell’s imagination has helped define futures that millions of people recognize. His work on Back to the Future Part II helped establish the look of its imagined 2015, including the hoverboard, and his career has taken him through Industrial Light & Magic, Jurassic Park, Men in Black and other major productions. Earlier work in transportation design, General Motors and Atari gave him a distinctive fluency in objects, environments and the stories they imply. His personal paintings and drawings redirect that fluency toward the natural world. Botanical forms become sculptural inventions; a bridge becomes an arrangement of color and balance. Bell’s fine art offers the pleasure of seeing a familiar structure transformed by an eye trained to imagine how it could be otherwise.
