With an unruly crown of hair, an eye patch, a pinstriped suit, and a skateboard resting beside him, the figure in The Skater looks ready to step into a story. His elongated silhouette and sideways grin bring together a mischievous character and the formal pose of a portrait. The board is held still, letting the personality of its owner take center stage.
Randy Gaul’s background offers an interesting context for this character: he joined Industrial Light & Magic as a concept designer in 1998, following freelance work in storyboards and creature and character design. Seen alongside that experience, The Skater invites us to imagine who this unusual rider might be—and what happens when he finally puts his board down and rolls away.
