Mixed media relief sculpture on deconstructed skateboard decks
by R. NUTT (aka Nate Geare)
Inspired by the layered visual language of graffiti murals, Get Chose began as a simple notebook sketch and evolved through watercolor into a complex, three-dimensional sculpture. Constructed from nine repurposed skateboard decks, each one cut into interlocking puzzle pieces, the work becomes both a canvas and a form in itself. Advanced woodworking techniques like router joinery and dovetailing hold the structure together—honoring craftsmanship while embracing the chaos of street aesthetics.
At the center of Get Chose is a play on alien abduction as a metaphor for selection—being in the right place at the right time. But it’s not just about luck. It’s about readiness. Being prepared for the moment when your art goes viral, or when a stranger in a gallery full of great work decides your work is the one. It’s about being chosen and putting your best self forward at any time because you never know when the time is yours.
The title pulls from Southern hip hop, specifically UGK and OutKast’s “Int’l Players Anthem,” where “get chose” refers to being picked—whether by a romantic interest, or in the world of street hustle, by someone looking for the best in the game. That raw energy of being seen, selected, and elevated, pulses through the piece.
This work marks the debut of R. NUTT—a nom de street and alternate identity for Geare, channeling the vibe of a tagger, the spirit of a character who might live behind the murals themselves.
